Meet Our Team

ELC instructors lead group wilderness trips across the country and throughout the world. In addition, they personally take these trips.

Each instructor has a wide range of experience in the field and is certified as Wilderness First Responders. Additionally, some staff hold certifications in Firearm Safety Instructor and CPR/First Aid Instructor.

Words from past participants

  • A simple, thoughtful gift

“That morning as we crawled out of our tents, we were met with something unexpected and deeply touching. Students had gathered wildflower bouquets and made handmade Father's Day cards for each of us...a simple, thoughtful gift that reminds me of the power of our outdoor experiences and how special these young people are in our lives as much as we are in theirs. To all families who entrust ELC instructors by sending your children out into wild and unfamiliar places with us - and to all who guide the next generation on rivers, trails, and in everyday life - thank you!”

    — Jason Jech, ELC Executive Director

  • ELC instructors believed in us

“ELC has taught me to slow down. To notice the tracks in the snow. To pay attention to the little things. And to realize how good it feels to work hard, to laugh around a campfire, and to be part of a group that’s trying to do something meaningful. ELC instructors believed in us, challenged us, and made the experience something I’ll never forget. I’m really grateful for the time they gave and the way they led by example.”

  • Taught me many life skills

“ELC instructors have taught me many life skills beyond how to set up a tent and read a map. Outdoor survival skills are some that I will use for a lifetime. I've gone on trips to the Boundary Waters, Superior Hiking Trail and Apostle Islands all with the confidence and knowledge I needed to be safe and have fun.”
