Jason Jech

Executive Director

Welcome to the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center. My personal journey with the ELC started back in 1978 as a 12-year-old kid signing up for as many programs as I could. I was lucky to learn from incredible instructors like Bruce Ause and Mark Gordon, who sparked in me a lifelong love of the outdoors and a deep respect for experiential learning.

Over the years, I moved from student to Junior Instructor and I was grateful for the chance to give back to the program that had given me so much. After high school, I followed this passion into college, eventually earning my bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Education from Northland College and a master’s degree in Education Administration from Mankato State.

I’ve been honored to serve in many roles at the ELC—from Field Instructor to Program Director—and since 2000, as Executive Director. For more than 40 years, this program has been a huge part of my life. I’ve seen firsthand how getting outside—away from screens and distractions—helps young people grow into confident, capable, and compassionate leaders.

I still love being outside with students or my own family, doing anything from paddling and hiking to just sitting around a campfire. I believe strongly in the power of shared experiences, real challenges, and time in nature to change lives.

Looking ahead, I’m committed to growing the ELC’s impact—making sure every young person who walks through our doors leaves with skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. I believe outdoor education is about more than just learning new skills—it’s about building resilient, compassionate communities. I welcome conversations and ideas from anyone who shares this vision.

If you're new to the ELC, I hope you'll give our programs a try. And if you’ve been part of this journey already—thank you. It means more than I can say.
